Mornings, I guess you can say I really dislike them. I thought becoming a parent would turn me into a morning person but it’s been eight years now so I guess that’s not working out. But, I have learned a few ways to survive them with three kids.
So here are just a few tips I’ve learned a long the way that help make mornings a little less hated and (mostly) tantrum free.
Prepare Prepare Prepare.
First things first, prepare EVERYTHING the night before. I mean EVERYTHING. Outfits, Lunches, heck even hair ties for the kids AND yourself.
I’ve come to learn that running around in the morning trying to find anything turns into a disaster and is usually a bad start to the day.
I prepare lunches for the next day right after dinner. That way I don’t have to clean up twice and it’s out of the way.
I get everyone’s outfits for the next day ready and place them on the kitchen table. So right after eating breakfast the kids get dressed. Is it weird that they get dressed in the dining room? Maybe, whatever.
Place Everything By Your Exit Route
Everything that needs to go out with the kids goes by the front door. School bags, jackets, shoes… OMG! SHOES! For the love of God make sure you have those shoes TOGETHER at the front door ready to go. I don’t know how, but there always seems to be one devil shoe missing (Pssst..check the dog food bag) that takes two hours to locate and now you’re late and asshole mom is back, so trust me, find the shoes the night before and place them by the front door.
I know it feels so right but it’s so wrong. Don’t do it.
Snoozing makes me feel more exhausted than I already am and makes me feel like I never want to get up, and once I finally do get up I realize we’re running late and turn into asshole mom. So yeah, as painful as it is, just get up.
Which leads me to my last bit of advice…
Get up before the kids.
As much as crawling out of bed sucks, there’s something wonderful about getting up before everyone else in the house. It’s so quiet and peaceful and gives me some time to collect my thoughts before the craziness starts. Did I mention it’s quiet?
Make a coffee, drink it hot, watch the news, grab some breakfast all in silence. I find mornings run so much smoother when I do this.
